The Artist Talal Moualla

Talal Moualla

Artist, critic and poet; Talal Moualla’s eye stretches far beyond the horizon of the canvas.

Born in Syria in 1952, into a family rich in artistic talent, Moualla acheived a Bachelor’s Degree in the Arabic Language from Tishreen University, Syria, and later moved to Siena, Italy, to continue his studies in Contemporary Art History. He has become a prominent member of numerous leading international cultural organizations including the International Artists Union (AIAP-Paris); the International Association of Art Critics (ICA-Paris); the Arab Fine Artists Union; the Fine Arts Syndicate, Syria; and the Emirates Fine Arts Society, UAE. He is currently the Director of the Sharjah Art Institute and Arabic Arts Centre in the UAE.

A co-founder of the Sharjah Biennial and Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, his own artistic expression has been enjoyed by thousands through solo exhibitions in the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Italy, Germany, Belgium and France. Moualla is also a frequent speaker at arts congresses and international fora .An acclaimed author and a regular contributor to the Arabic and international media, his books have played an important role in the development of art criticism in the Arab-speaking world. Having served on several international juries, Moualla’s ongoing contribution to the Middle Eastern art scene is strongly valued and is in high demand.

When it comes to his art, Moualla shudders at the thought of developing a signature style. Rather than being constrained by a fixed approach, his artistic quest can be summarized by a constant struggle to maintain a sense of freedom where he can implement ideas and develop them to their maximum potential. “When I work,” he says, “the first thing I look for is self-satisfaction. Every work I create gives me the impetus to achieve another…I have to allow myself to soar until I reach the heavens, in order to convey the message.”

Talal Moualla According to the award-winning Syrian author, poet and artist Ismail Al Rifai, “Moualla is one of the anxious spirits that never stops blazing while searching for its salvation through the ambush of poetry and the temptation of colour…he crosses from a land surrounded by hell to a land fenced by dreams.”

According to the Tunisian artist, critic and scholar Fateh Bin Amer, Moualla is achameleon of the canvas. His unpredictability is manifested in extreme changes in his approach. Silent yet charming, Moualla stands in a far-flung corner, belligerent to science and philosophy. All he can do is let art and instincts guide him in expressing the very essence of existence; that which is overlooked by the eye and immeasurable to the mind.
